As If Nothing Had Changed

they walk
beyond the grove
where only the dark plants grow
and strangle the light
from the innocent

they walk
further than before
into a new earth
trembling

they walk
into the muddy waters
awake
but still asleep
as they wade

they walk
sinking slowly
facing forward
knowing nothing
trusting

they walk
through the patch of green
laughing
as the leaves
turn to incandescent dreams

they walk
to the edge
of sheer cliffs
and peer over
only to find
themselves
